Pyro in our tier list
A Pain is Pyro's fuel: incoming damage builds toward a very high Great Sword burst. The payoff is strong, but Pyro has to absorb hits before it arrives, so the strength sits behind a condition, which matches our A definition. See the full Monster Hunter Outlanders Tier List.
Pyro strengths and weaknesses
Strengths
- The card names very high burst as the payoff, so a well-timed Great Sword strike should hit extremely hard on paper.
- The launch events bring Pyro at no cost, so Pyro takes no pulls, no exchange pick and no subscription choice.
- A Perfect Evade keeps the Great Sword charge, so Pyro can dodge and still land the stored swing.
Weaknesses
- Pyro has to take damage before the burst comes online, which spends health and leaves less room for a misread.
- Great Sword swings are slow, and the card lists nothing that helps squadmates.
- On paper the payoff is hard to time with the Co-Op Skill, which is why Pyro sits in B on our team list.
Our take
- Day-one paper call: claim the free Pyro from the launch events and spend nothing else on Pyro. The first monthly subscription choice and the 300-recruit exchange both do more on Arkaya, so keep them for that.
- If you control Pyro yourself, bring a partner who softens damage, such as Arkaya or Madelyn. This is a judgment from the kit, not from our own hunts, and we will revise it once live data shows how much each hit is worth.
Yes. Pyro lands in A tier for day one because the kit turns damage taken into very high burst. The trade-off is that Pyro must soak up blows before any of it pays out.
Getting Pyro costs nothing. The official launch events bring Pyro and Luka to your squad, so spend your picks elsewhere. Our Monster Hunter Outlanders reroll tier list points fresh accounts at Arkaya instead.
What the official card tells us
Most Adventurers fill a resource by attacking. Pyro fills one by getting hurt. According to the official card, damage Pyro takes becomes power, and the stated payoff is very high burst. On paper, that makes Pyro a high-risk, high-reward Assault.
The Great Sword suits that idea. The official weapon overview describes slow swings whose power climbs with charge level, plus evasion, a guard and hit-and-run play. A Perfect Evade keeps the charge. Put together, we expect a Pyro player to soak a blow, line up a charged swing and spend the stored power on one heavy strike.
Where Pyro fits in a squad
Players report one Adventurer is yours and three fight as AI squadmates; how online co-op works is unconfirmed. Pyro takes a front-line damage slot, and with nothing on the card for allies, the value lies in how fast the burst ends a fight.
That trait also holds Pyro to B on our best team list: hits Pyro absorbs are hard to time with the Co-Op Skill, where all squadmates must land hits on whichever part the activating Adventurer selected. One player reports the Assault squadmate skill deals a burst of damage when the monster is suppressed, which could suit Pyro in a squadmate slot.
Good partners lower the cost of getting hit. Arkaya covered the whole squad with a shield in the closed beta tests, Madelyn carries medicines, and Luka, the other launch event gift, adds damage from range.
What we will check after launch
Launch came on October 28, 2026 at 22:00 UTC (October 29 in Asia). Our open questions for Pyro:
- How much power each hit taken adds, and how long Pyro keeps it.
- Whether a guarded or shielded hit still feeds the conversion.
- How well an AI-controlled Pyro handles the risk.
If a nearby Support makes the hits cheap, Pyro could move up; if the burst costs too much health, Pyro could drop. Any change lands in the changelog of our tier list.
What to pair with Pyro
- Arkaya: Closed beta testers saw Arkaya's shield spread to the whole squad. That extra health on top of the bar should make the hits Pyro needs cheaper, on paper.
- Madelyn: Madelyn carries medicines, and one player reports Madelyn's ultimate heals the squad, which helps Pyro recover from the damage that feeds the burst.
- Luka: Luka also comes free from the launch events, so a fresh account starts with two strong damage picks, one up close and one at range.
Pyro FAQ
Is Pyro good in Monster Hunter Outlanders?
Yes. Our day-one ranking places Pyro in A, as a Great Sword Assault whose card converts damage taken into very high burst. That burst only shows up after Pyro absorbs hits, so the power comes with a risky condition attached.
How do I get Pyro?
Play the launch events. Officially, they bring the SSR Adventurers Luka and Pyro to your squad, so no pulls are needed. Pyro also sits in the standard SSR pool, so a recruitment pull can produce Pyro too.
Should I take Pyro from the monthly subscription choice?
No, on paper. The first monthly subscription purchase offers Keres, Pyro or Arkaya, and Pyro already arrives free. Take Arkaya, the only S pick of the three, or Keres if Arkaya is already on your account.
Should I use the 300-recruit exchange on Pyro?
No. After 300 pulls on the standard recruitment you choose one SSR for free, first time only, and a free Adventurer is the wrong use of it. Our SSR tier list explains why Arkaya is the better pick.
What weapon does Pyro use?
Pyro fights with the Great Sword. Only two of the 13 Adventurers use it, Pyro and Luxheart, and on our list Pyro sits one tier above Luxheart.
Is Pyro good for beginners?
Not the easiest start. Pyro is B on our beginner list: taking hits on purpose only pays off when you know which attacks you can survive, and that comes with experience.
Is Pyro good solo?
Yes on paper. Pyro is A on our solo list, because very high burst shortens a fight when you control Pyro yourself, as long as you can afford the damage that powers it.
