How beginner-friendly each class looks on paper
Our take
- This is a day-one list built from the official profiles, not from hands-on hunts. Now that the game is live, we will check each placement and log every move.
- For a first character, we would take Madelyn or Luka and choose Adventure Mode. Fighting at range buys time to learn how a monster moves before you commit to melee.
How we rank Monster Hunter Outlanders adventurers
- Room for mistakes
- Can a new hunter get away with a late dodge? Kits that attack from range or hold a strong guard turn a bad read into a smaller mistake.
- Simple to play
- We score a kit higher when its main loop works from the first hunt, with no gauge to fill or stance to switch before the damage shows up.
- Works with Adventure Mode
- The launch FAQ lists a three-button Adventure Mode with Attack, Evade and Burst. We favor kits whose core idea fits those three buttons on paper.
Why each adventurer is in its tier
S Safe first picks for almost any new player and any early hunt.
All three leave room for error from the very first fight. Madelyn and Luka can stay back with a Bow, and Ouyang Varen can raise a strong guard when a hit is coming. None of them gates damage behind a meter, on paper.
- Madelyn: A Bow keeps Madelyn out of reach, and the official card adds medicines plus a Spore burst that boosts Madelyn and nearby allies.
- Luka: A very mobile Bow lets Luka reposition often, and the launch events bring Luka to your squad with no recruiting luck needed.
- Ouyang Varen: The strong guard is the safety net here: block when unsure, then thrust, and let Impetus raise thrust damage as you learn.
A Strong starters once you clear one condition each: a meter, a jump or close range.
Each of these three works for a new player but asks for one extra step. Arkaya has to fill Resolve before the big shield blow, Pepper must get airborne before the midair barrage, and Keres has to stay in close with Dual Blades. Learn that one step and the kit opens up, on paper.
- Arkaya: Steady Lance attacks fill Resolve for a heavy blow and a large shield, which covered the whole squad in the closed beta tests.
- Pepper: Powerful shots from range keep Pepper at a distance; the rapid midair fire needs a skill that sends Pepper airborne first.
- Keres: Fast, relentless Dual Blades combos are easy to grasp; the catch is staying close, and some skills open enhanced follow-ups.
B Good picks for new players, but someone in the same class is easier to learn.
These four can carry a hunt, yet each one hides its payoff behind a condition a beginner is likely to miss. Pyro has to take hits to build power, Haze needs Archdemon Mode for the parry moves, Rhodes charges up energy before the explosion, and Midori leans on timing. Madelyn, Luka and Ouyang Varen cover the same classes with less to track.
- Pyro: The burst damage is very high, but Pyro builds it by enduring attacks, which is risky while you still misread monsters.
- Haze: Haze asks a beginner to manage a mode before defending: the parries come from Archdemon Mode, and only in some situations.
- Rhodes: Charged Hammer attacks gain and convert energy, and the big explosion comes only after Rhodes spends it, so there is a lot to track.
- Midori: Graceful evasive movement helps, but Long Sword timed counters reward good reads more than fast thumbs.
C Narrow kits for now; skip them as a beginner and come back once the basics feel easy.
Each of these three asks you to manage a second system while dodging the monster. Luxheart swaps attack stances with Heat, Ryunosuke must eat in certain stances to reach Well-fed, and Raya spends stamina to fill Demon Gauge faster. That is a lot for a first week, so we expect them to reward practiced players far more than new ones.
- Luxheart: Heat drives stance switching on a Great Sword, plus a stored-energy barrage. The most moving parts on the roster, on paper.
- Ryunosuke: Spirit Blade attacks get much stronger once Ryunosuke is Well-fed, but eating in the right stance first is a habit to learn.
- Raya: Agile dodging looks friendly, but some skills burn stamina to fill Demon Gauge, and a new player may run dry mid-fight.

Why Madelyn, Luka and Ouyang Varen lead
The hardest part of a first hunt is reading a monster you have never seen. Two of our three S picks answer that with distance. Madelyn and Luka both use a Bow, so a missed read usually costs less than it would up close. Ouyang Varen answers it the other way: the official profile calls out strong guarding on the Lance, so when you are unsure, you can block and wait for an opening.
None of the three locks damage behind a meter. Spores, Thunder Coating and Impetus sit on top of a kit that already works. That is the main reason the trio beats Arkaya, whose big payoff needs a full Resolve bar first.
What makes a kit harder to learn
We read each official profile and asked one question: what has to happen before this kit pays off? The answers sort the list.
- A position to reach. Pepper must go airborne for the midair barrage.
- A cost to pay. Pyro takes hits to build power, and Raya spends stamina.
- A meter to fill. Arkaya needs Resolve, Rhodes needs stored energy.
- A mode or state to manage. Haze needs Archdemon Mode, Luxheart juggles Heat stances, and Ryunosuke must reach Well-fed.
The more of these a kit stacks, the lower it sits here. Haze shows how class labels can mislead: the class is Support, but the card lists no help for allies.
First-week tips from the official systems
- Pick Adventure Mode first. Three buttons are less to learn, and you can move to Classic Mode later.
- Do not worry about whetstones. Melee weapons have Sharpness, but the official guide says it does not drop when you attack, so trying Ouyang Varen or Keres costs no upkeep.
- Practice Perfect Evade early. Good timing turns a narrow escape into a chance to hit back, because a last-moment dodge sets up special follow-ups. Every Adventurer has it.
- Clear the launch event missions. They give items for more than 400 recruits and bring Luka and Pyro, both SSR. Luka is one of our S picks here.
- Learn one kit before Ecological Rank climbs. Monsters get stronger as your adventure moves forward, so the early hunts are the best place to practice.

Who this adventurer tier list is for
New players
Start with the S tier. If none of the three appeals to you, Arkaya and Pepper are the next safest, and both make their one extra step easy to see.
Experienced players
If you already know Monster Hunter, the C tier is where the busier kits sit. Luxheart, Ryunosuke and Raya trade ease for more to manage, which may suit a returning hunter.
